Peter Brocks' first Bathurst crown came in 1972, after driving his XU-1 for the whole distance. This was the last year drivers could race without the assistance of a co-driver. The race took him 6hrs 1min and 53secs to complete.

Colin Bond in the second of the works Toranas' had crashed in the opening stage of the race leaving his team mate (Brock) to fend for himself.
